This quote came from my playing days at the University of Maine. Throughout my five years as a college team member, our head coach came up with multiple sayings, quotations, stories, videos, etc. to put things in perspective and make sure we were focused on our goals. Certain ones stuck, and this is one of them.
Whether you are up or down, keep working. When times get tough, there is nothing to do but work tirelessly. My college football team consisted of players from all different sorts of places and demographics. Some came from money, some came from nothing. These factors were all irrelevant when we were on the field and when we were working on our game. The common denominator between us all was the game of football. The only way to create cohesion among a team is through work.
Our coach had taken this quote from a self-made millionaire who made his fortune in the shoe industry. Family life, friendships, business, athletics, academics, among others, are all arenas to “keep chopping”.
Individuals who have difficult situations may complain and look for handouts while individuals who have cozy situations may not work as hard as they should. Both instances are detrimental to the growth of themselves personally and society as a whole. You owe it to yourself and your team to give 100%, 100% of the time. By maintaining a meticulous and continuous work ethic through thick and thin, individuals and teams will move in the right direction.
